Arbitrary code execution via unescaped fence language
Published Jan 31, 2023 · Updated Mar 27, 2025
Cross-site scripting in Joplin Desktop App before 2.9.17 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code through crafted Markdown. MdToHtml interpolates the code-fence language string unescaped into data-joplin-language and data-joplin-source-open HTML attributes. Rendering a note containing a malicious fence language is required, after which injected event-handler script runs in the desktop application context.
