Privilege escalation via out-of-bounds key write
Published Feb 3, 2023 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Heap-based buffer overflow in sheredom json.h allows local users to execute arbitrary code by parsing crafted JSON input. With specific json_parse_ex flags, invalid exponent syntax after NaN leaves json_parse_key with an out-of-bounds string pointer that it uses for an eight-byte heap write. Exploitation requires local low-privileged execution in a consuming program that enables the triggering flags; success can elevate privileges or crash the process.
