System compromise via malicious download extension
Published Dec 22, 2022 · Updated Apr 15, 2025
A file-handling flaw in Mozilla Firefox before 107 allows remote attackers to trigger system compromise when an HTML download uses a malicious extension. The download-save path uses the page title as a filename without sanitizing dangerous suffixes, so a crafted title can create an executable file instead of an HTML document. Exploitation requires a victim to save the malicious page and later run the downloaded file; the advisory does not claim automatic execution.
