File tampering via permissive installation ACLs
Published Nov 29, 2022 · Updated Apr 25, 2025
Incorrect permissions in Chocolatey PHP package 8.1.12 and earlier allow remote authenticated users to modify installed PHP files. The package leaves C:\tools\php81 and every file beneath it writable by the Windows Authenticated Users group instead of restricting changes to administrators. Any authenticated account that can reach the directory can tamper with PHP binaries or scripts; published evidence does not establish later privileged execution.
