Arbitrary command execution via shell-enabled Mermaid export
Published Dec 7, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025
OS command injection in Markdown Preview Enhanced 0.6.5 and 0.19.6 allows context-dependent attackers to execute commands during GFM export. The Mermaid PNG exporter passes the attacker-controlled pngFilePath argument to execFile with shell mode enabled, so shell syntax is interpreted. Exploitation requires a victim to open the crafted Markdown file and invoke Save as Markdown; commands run with that editor user’s privileges.
