CVE-2022-44940Public exploit

Process crash via unchecked dynamic-section pointer

Published Dec 19, 2022 · Updated Apr 17, 2025

Out-of-bounds read in Patchelf 0.9 allows context-dependent attackers to crash the utility with a crafted ELF file. The modifyRPath function derives an Elf_Dyn pointer from an untrusted section offset and dereferences it without first checking that the structure lies within the input buffer. Triggering requires Patchelf to process the crafted file during an RPATH operation; the demonstrated consequence is a process crash.
