Arbitrary file write via unresolved archive paths
Published Dec 6, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025
Path traversal in py7zr 0.20.0 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to write arbitrary files by supplying a crafted 7z archive. SevenZipFile.extractall() joined archive member names to the destination but checked lexical containment without resolving traversal components or symlink targets. Exploitation requires an application or user to extract the malicious archive; writes occur with that process's filesystem permissions.
