Account takeover via caller-selected password reset
Published Feb 20, 2023 · Updated Mar 18, 2025
Missing authentication in Gnuboard 5.5.4 and 5.5.5 allows remote attackers to reset any user's password through the web interface. The bbs/password_reset_update.php handler accepted a caller-supplied mb_id and updated that account's password without tying the identifier to a completed identity-verification session. No prior account or user interaction is required; a successful request changes the selected user's credentials and enables account takeover.
