Converter crash via unbounded page-tree recursion
Published Dec 19, 2022 · Updated Apr 17, 2025
Stack overflow in pdftojson commit 94204bb allows attackers to crash the converter by supplying a malformed PDF file. The parser recursively descends the PDF page tree in Catalog::countPageTree without a depth or cycle limit, exhausting the process stack while Object::copy handles referenced objects. Processing the crafted PDF is required; the demonstrated result is an AddressSanitizer-detected abort, and no stronger consequence is established.
