CVE-2022-43995

Heap over-read via short password

Published Nov 2, 2022 · Updated May 5, 2025

Out-of-bounds read in Sudo 1.8.0 through 1.9.12 allows local users to read heap data via passwords of seven characters or fewer. In the plugins/sudoers/auth/passwd.c crypt() backend, password handling indexes a buffer as though it contains at least eight characters, reading beyond its allocation. The condition requires local access to Sudo with passwd authentication enabled; impact varies by libraries, compiler, and processor architecture and can include confidentiality loss or a service crash.
