Code execution via ambiguous Git arguments
Published Feb 7, 2023 · Updated Mar 25, 2025
OS command injection in the Git package in Rancher allows remote authenticated users to execute code through crafted repository URLs. The package passes attacker-controlled Git input to the Git binary without disambiguating option-like values, so crafted catalog or KDM URLs alter the invoked command. By default, only administrators can add untrusted Helm catalogs or change the KDM download URL, and successful exploitation runs code in the Rancher host context.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=Rancher <2.5.17 changes=[{"at":"2.6.10","status":"unaffected"},{"at":"2.7.1","status":"unaffected"}]
