CVE-2022-43600Network attack vector

Code execution via UINT16 tile-loop wraparound

Published Dec 23, 2022 · Updated Apr 14, 2025

Heap-based buffer overflow in OpenImageIO 2.4.4.2 allows remote attackers to execute code through a controlled 16-bit IFF image specification. In IFFOutput::close(), a uint16_t x-coordinate loop uses <= against xmax=0xFFFF, wraps to zero, and continues copying pixels beyond the allocated heap buffer. Reachability requires control of an input file or specification used to create an RLE-compressed UINT16 IFF output; the wild write crashes the process or enables code execution.
