Application crash via recursive FITS output close
Published Dec 23, 2022 · Updated Apr 14, 2025
Denial of service in OpenImageIO 2.4.4.2 allows attackers to crash an application via input used to write a FITS image. FitsOutput::close calls write_scanlines for tile emulation; an out-of-range y value makes FitsOutput::write_scanline call close again, causing unbounded recursion and stack exhaustion. Exploitation requires control of an input image or specification consumed by a FITS-writing workflow, and the resulting process crash interrupts that application.
