Code execution via third-party dependency resolution
Published Nov 7, 2022 · Updated May 5, 2025
Dependency confusion in Democritus d8s-timer 0.1.0 allows attackers to execute third-party code when pip resolves democritus-uuids. The release declares democritus-uuids as a dependency even though that package name was controlled by a third party, causing installation to fetch and run code outside the maintainer's control. Exploitation requires installation of the affected release with dependency resolution enabled; the public record does not disclose the backdoor's code-level behavior.
