Decoder crash via out-of-bounds chroma interpolation
Published Nov 2, 2022 · Updated May 2, 2025
Heap buffer overflow in libde265 1.0.8 allows remote attackers to crash a decoder process by supplying a crafted H.265 video file. The put_epel_16_fallback chroma interpolation routine in fallback-motion.cc reads two bytes immediately beyond an allocated image buffer during inter-prediction. The file must be processed by an application using the affected decoder; the demonstrated consequence is a service-interrupting abort, with no reported data disclosure or code execution.
