Service crashes and code execution via PAC overflows
Published Dec 25, 2022 · Updated Apr 14, 2025
PAC parsing integer overflows in MIT Kerberos 5 before 1.19.4 and 1.20.x before 1.20.1 allow remote authenticated users to crash services. In krb5_pac_parse, attacker-controlled buffer counts and offset-plus-length values wrap during header, allocation, and bounds calculations, causing out-of-bounds reads or undersized allocations followed by heap writes. A principal key can reach a KDC or kadmind; application-server exploitation requires its service key, code execution is limited to 32-bit platforms, and Heimdal before 7.7.1 has a related service-crash flaw.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
