CVE-2022-4203Network attack vector

TLS process crash via OtherName type confusion

Published Feb 24, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025

Out-of-bounds read in OpenSSL 3.0.0 through 3.0.7 allows remote attackers to crash TLS clients or servers via crafted certificates. nc_match_single() treats a non-SmtpUtf8Mailbox OtherName constraint as an ASN1_IA5STRING and passes it to nc_email_eai(), reading beyond its actual representation. Exploitation requires a CA-signed malicious certificate or verification that continues after trust-path failure; the proven consequence is a crash, while memory disclosure remains theoretical.
