CVE-2022-41858

Local system crash via SLIP detach race

Published Jan 17, 2023 · Updated Apr 7, 2025

NULL pointer dereference in the Linux kernel's SLIP driver allows local users to crash the system during interface detachment. The sl_tx_timeout function calls tty_chars_in_buffer with sl->tty after slip_close can set that pointer to NULL, because the timeout path fails to check the cleared TTY pointer. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and a configured SLIP interface; the demonstrated consequence is a kernel crash.
