Service crash via oversized edit-list allocation
Published Sep 30, 2022 · Updated May 20, 2025
Resource exhaustion in Bento4 1.6.0-639 allows local users to crash MP4-processing applications via a crafted MP4 file. AP4_ElstAtom passes an attacker-controlled edit-list entry count to AP4_Array<AP4_ElstEntry>::EnsureCapacity without an allocation limit, triggering a multi-gigabyte allocation. Exploitation requires a user or local workflow to process the crafted file; the demonstrated consequence is an out-of-memory abort rather than data access or code execution.
