CVE-2022-4149

Local privilege escalation via logplaceholder TOCTOU race

Published Jun 15, 2023 · Updated Dec 12, 2024

TOCTOU race in Netskope Client for Windows 95 and earlier allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through crafted log files. On service restart, the SYSTEM service deletes and recreates logplaceholder in a user-writable public directory, letting a user win the race, set ACLs, and redirect privileged log writes with a Windows pseudo-symlink. Standard local access and precise race timing are required; successful exploitation makes protected system locations writable with SYSTEM authority.
