Arbitrary code execution via dependency confusion
Published Oct 11, 2022 · Updated May 20, 2025
Dependency-confusion code execution in d8s-utility 0.1.0 allows attackers to run arbitrary code when the package is installed. The release declares democritus-urls as a dependency even though that PyPI name was no longer controlled by the maintainer, so pip resolves and installs third-party code. A victim must install the affected release from PyPI; the dependency then executes with the installing process's privileges.
