Security-control bypass via read-only archive entry

Published Nov 9, 2022 · Updated Aug 10, 2026

Security feature bypass in Microsoft Windows allows remote attackers to evade Mark of the Web protections with a crafted ZIP file. During extraction, Windows fails to write the Zone.Identifier alternate data stream when an archive entry is marked read-only. A user must download, extract, and open the file; the bypass suppresses MOTW-dependent warnings and protections but does not itself execute code.
