Local privilege escalation via unchecked PROPVARIANT types
Published Oct 11, 2022 · Updated Jan 12, 2026
Type confusion in Microsoft Windows COM+ Event System Service allows local users to execute code with LOCAL SERVICE privileges. In es.dll, InMemoryRegRow::PutPropertyBag fails to check PROPVARIANT vt fields before treating caller-supplied BLOB bytes as PROPVARIANT objects. Normal users can reach the interface outside a sandbox, and resulting code can use SeImpersonatePrivilege to compromise the system.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
