CVE-2022-40733

System reboot via DirectComposition null dereference

Published Dec 18, 2024 · Updated Dec 20, 2024

Null pointer dereference in Microsoft Windows 11 22000.593 and Windows Server 2022 20348.643 allows local users to reboot systems. DirectComposition::CResourceMarshaler::SetFloatProperty sets a weak-reference status bit for float properties 0x1 or 0x36 when no weak reference exists, causing GetWeakReferenceBase to dereference a null table result. Exploitation requires an unprivileged local user to run crafted code; the demonstrated consequence is a system crash and reboot.
