CVE-2022-40151Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Application termination via deeply nested object injection

Published Sep 16, 2022 · Updated Apr 21, 2025

Denial of service in XStream 1.4.19 and earlier allows remote attackers to terminate applications through crafted XML. The fromXML unmarshalling path recursively instantiates attacker-supplied, deeply nested set objects until Java raises a StackOverflowError. Exposure requires an embedding application to pass attacker-controlled XML to XStream; the resulting thread abort can terminate the hosting application.
