Unauthenticated service interruption via unbounded sscanf writes
Published Sep 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Stack-based buffer overflow in Tenda AC21 firmware 16.03.08.15 allows remote attackers to interrupt service via a crafted HTTP request. The saveParentControlInfo handler passes the time parameter to compare_parentcontrol_time(), where sscanf uses unbounded %[^-] and %s conversions to write into stack buffers. No authentication or user interaction is required, and the published proof of concept demonstrates denial of service rather than code execution.
