SYSTEM code execution via unquoted service path
Published Oct 7, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Panini Everest Engine 2.0.4 allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM through an unquoted service path. The SYSTEM service starts %PROGRAMDATA%\Panini\Everest Engine\EverestEngine.exe without quoting the path, so Windows selects a planted %PROGRAMDATA%\Panini\Everest.exe first. A low-privileged local account must be able to create that file and wait for a service restart, after which the planted code runs with SYSTEM privileges.
