CVE-2022-39843Public exploit

Code execution via unchecked worksheet format copy

Published Sep 5, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Stack-based buffer overflow in Lotus 1-2-3 R3 through 9.8.2 and 123elf before 1.0.0rc3 allows attackers to execute code via a crafted worksheet. In process_fmt(), a WK3 w3r_format element supplies attacker-controlled data and length to a copy routine that writes into a 1,024-byte stack buffer without checking the destination size. Exploitation requires a victim to open the malicious worksheet, after which the overwritten return address permits code execution with the application's privileges.
