CVE-2022-39242Network attack vector

Gas-price inflation via missing post-dispatch weight refunds

Published Sep 24, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025

Incorrect weight accounting in Parity Technologies Frontier allows remote attackers to inflate Ethereum chain gas prices. CheckedSignature::SelfContained execution omits Extra::post_dispatch, so unused weight remains charged from the transaction gas limit after execution. Exploitation requires costly transactions with large refunds, unused gas, or reverts; it can spam blocks but cannot alter chain state.
