CVE-2022-3924Network attack vector

Remote service crash via stale-answer SERVFAIL race

Published Jan 25, 2023 · Updated Mar 31, 2025

Denial of service in Internet Systems Consortium BIND 9 affected releases allows remote attackers to crash named via recursive queries. At the recursive-clients soft quota, a race between serving a stale answer and sending an early SERVFAIL triggers a reachable assertion. Exposure requires stale-answer-enable set to yes, stale-answer-client-timeout above zero, enough waiting recursive clients to cross the soft quota, and a stale answer for an older request.
