Administrator-triggered site outage via unvalidated page move
Published Sep 2, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Denial of service in MediaWiki GrowthExperiments through 1.38.2 allows remote authenticated users to make a site unavailable via a page move. Moving malformed JSON to MediaWiki:GrowthExperimentsConfig.json bypasses GrowthConfigValidation, and message-based WikiPageConfig error handling then fails sitewide. Administrator privileges are required to move the configuration page; the demonstrated consequence is a complete site outage.
