Subscriber-to-Administrator escalation via arbitrary option update
Published Jan 2, 2023 · Updated Apr 10, 2025
Missing authorization in iubenda for WordPress before 3.3.3 allows remote authenticated users to grant themselves administrator privileges. The ajax_save_options AJAX action accepts an arbitrary array-valued option name and writes it without verifying authorization or plugin ownership. Subscriber access is sufficient to replace wp_user_roles capabilities, enabling control of plugins, themes, users, content, and site settings.
