Administrator privilege escalation via unchecked role assignment
Published Feb 15, 2023 · Updated Mar 19, 2025
Improper access control in NiterForum 2.5.0-beta allows remote authenticated users to grant administrator privileges to any account. AdminController's /user2588/setAdmin/id handler checks only that loginUser exists, then sets groupId 19 for the attacker-supplied user ID. Any registered account can invoke the endpoint and promote its own or another account, gaining administrative control.
