Application crash via unchecked MPEG bit extraction
Published Sep 15, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Buffer overflow in MPlayer and MEncoder SVN-r38374-13.0.1 allows local users to crash either application via a crafted media file. The mp_getbits function in libmpdemux/mpeg_hdr.c extracts bits using calculated buffer offsets without verifying that the requested bits remain inside the input. Processing attacker-supplied MPEG data is required, and the published impact is limited to an application crash without data disclosure or modification.
