Process crash via unchecked ASF metadata length
Published Sep 15, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Out-of-bounds read in MPlayer and MEncoder SVN-r38374-13.0.1 allows local users to crash either program with a crafted ASF file. The read_meta_record() parser in libmpdemux/asfheader.c subtracts each field size from the remaining buffer length before confirming that enough bytes remain, so a short metadata record permits reads beyond the buffer. Opening the file is required, and the observed consequence is termination of the command-line process rather than data disclosure or system compromise.
