Local privilege escalation via updater task execution
Published Sep 19, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in MSI Center 1.0.50.0 allows local users to run a crafted executable with administrative privileges. The localhost CMD_AutoUpdateSDK handler in C_Features passes a user-supplied payload to ExecuteTask, which splits it into an executable and custom arguments without an authorization boundary. A low-privileged local session can reach the loopback service and create an administrator account or execute other code with administrative rights.
