CVE-2022-38238Public exploit

Process crash via DCTStream heap-buffer over-read

Published Aug 16, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024

Heap-buffer over-read in Xpdf commit ffaf11c allows local users to crash pdftops when it processes a crafted PDF file. DCTStream::lookChar() reads four bytes immediately past a 65,536-byte heap allocation while the PDF stream passes through the lexer. Processing attacker-supplied content is required, and the published reproducer demonstrates an AddressSanitizer abort rather than code execution.
