Server restart via crafted backend reason phrase
Published Aug 11, 2022 · Updated Oct 20, 2025
Denial of service in Varnish Cache 7.0.0 through 7.0.2 and 7.1.0 allows context-dependent attackers to restart the server via forged backend responses. Backend response-status handling preserves a specially formatted reason phrase until an internal assertion fails and the server process restarts. Attackers must control or influence responses from a configured backend; the resulting restart interrupts cached HTTP service.
