Vault secret disclosure via unredacted template errors
Published Aug 17, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Information disclosure in HashiCorp Consul Template allows attackers to expose Vault secrets through invalid-template errors. template.Template.Execute embeds values associated with a template execution error into the returned error string without redacting Vault secret values. Exploitation requires control of template content that misuses Vault-derived values and access to the returned error or a log containing it; the demonstrated impact is secret disclosure.
