SYSTEM code execution via dependency-path redirection
Published Oct 11, 2022 · Updated Jan 2, 2025
Privilege escalation in Microsoft Windows allows local users to execute arbitrary code as SYSTEM through a CSRSS dependency lookup. CSRSS.exe accepts a DOS device redirection that changes the path used to search for dependencies, causing privileged code to resolve attacker-controlled content. Exploitation requires prior low-privileged code execution on the target, after which the payload runs with SYSTEM privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
