Root command execution via runtar argument injection
Published Apr 16, 2023 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Argument injection in Amanda 3.5.1 allows local users with backup-account access to execute commands as root through runtar. The setuid-root wrapper increments its good_option counter twice for space-separated tar options, so an equals-delimited option lets the following crafted argument bypass validation and reach /usr/bin/tar unchanged. Access to the local backup account and executable runtar binary is required; successful exploitation grants a root shell and complete host control.
