Remote heap corruption via undersized alias arrays
Published Aug 7, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Heap-based buffer overflow in Exim before 4.95 allows remote attackers to corrupt heap memory during reverse-DNS host-name lookup. The host_name_lookup function underallocates alias-pointer arrays by omitting space for the terminating NULL, so the terminator is written past the heap allocation. The flaw is reachable when sender_host_name is set and lookup returns aliases; demonstrated impact is a server crash, while code execution is not established.
