Consensus manipulation in Go Ethereum through 1.10.21 allows remote attackers with mining capacity to replace main-chain blocks. The proof-of-work difficulty adjustment derives block difficulty from miner-chosen timestamps, while fork choice prefers the branch with greater total difficulty. Exploitation requires mining a competing block during a narrow timing window; successful attacks increase the miner's rewards and displace honest blocks as uncles.
