CVE-2022-3724Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Application crash via USB-HID format string

Published Dec 9, 2022 · Updated Apr 22, 2025

Format-string misuse in Wireshark 3.6.0 through 3.6.8 allows attackers to crash the application with malformed USB-HID data on Windows. The USB-HID dissector passes the literal label "Keyboard 5 and %" into a printf-style allocation path, where Windows treats the stray percent sign as an invalid format directive. A packet injected onto a monitored link reaches the flaw without authentication, while the capture-file path requires an operator to open the crafted trace; the result is process termination only.
