Service interruption via unsafe MEI XML parsing
Published Sep 7, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
XXE in DDMAL MEI2Volpiano 0.8.2 allows remote attackers to interrupt service by supplying a crafted MEI XML file. The MEItoVolpiano.get_mei_elements method passes the supplied file directly to xml.etree.ElementTree.parse without defenses against malicious XML expansion. Exploitation requires a consuming application to pass attacker-controlled MEI to the library, where expansion can exhaust CPU or memory until the process stops responding.
