Root code execution via raw syslog-ng expressions
Published Sep 7, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Injection in the Securonix Snypr 6.4 syslog-ng configuration wizard allows remote authenticated users to execute code on ingesters. The console copies an unvalidated source expression into a root-run syslog-ng configuration, allowing injected destination and template statements to append attacker-controlled text to files such as root's crontab. The attacker needs the Manage Ingesters permission; a paired ingester then executes the injected cron entry as root, while the console host itself is not exposed by this path.
