Local privilege escalation via unchecked configuration integrity
Published Aug 18, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Improper privilege management in McAfee Security Scan Plus before 4.1.262.1 allows local users to execute code with elevated permissions. The application trusts a user-modifiable configuration file without checking its integrity, enabling a living-off-the-land binary to proxy attacker-controlled code. A low-privileged Windows account with local access must first alter that file; successful exploitation elevates permissions and permits arbitrary code execution.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
