Root code execution via unbounded pppoeUser formatting
Published Aug 25, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Stack overflow in TOTOLINK A3700R 9.1.2u.6134_B20201202 allows remote attackers to execute code through a crafted pppoeUser value. The cstecgi.cgi setOpModeCfg request passes the attacker-controlled pppoeUser string to sprintf without a length limit, overflowing a stack destination and permitting control-flow hijacking. The HTTP proof of concept requires no authorization; successful exploitation runs a root shell, while failed attempts can crash the router service.
