SYSTEM command execution via elevated tray app
Published Jul 23, 2022 · Updated Aug 3, 2024
Privilege escalation in Scooter Software Beyond Compare 4.2.0 through 4.4.2 allows local users to execute applications as SYSTEM. The Windows EXE installer starts the Clipboard Compare tray app as SYSTEM, which can start Beyond Compare and then a command prompt at that privilege level. Exploitation requires a standard user in the login session active during a SYSTEM installation; later logins run the tray app as that user.
