Code execution via mismatched Luac upvalue counts
Published Sep 6, 2022 · Updated Apr 23, 2025
Out-of-bounds write in Rizin 0.4.0 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to execute code when a user opens a malicious Luac file. In _luac_build_info, the Lua binary plugin allocated upvalue_names from the ordinary upvalue count, then indexed it once per debug-upvalue entry without bounding the second list. Exploitation requires local user interaction with an attacker-supplied file and can run code with the affected Rizin process's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
